Health through exercise prescription

On the rise….

Not a day goes by, where there is not some article on the incidence of overweight and obesity in children. Having worked with overweight children for many years now, I have come to realise that the only way of really tackling this problem is by preventing it happening in the first place.

I know that doesn’t help those who have already found themselves in an unhealthy weight range but loosing body fat and making muscle is hard work, especially for a child. Having the will power to change bad food habits and adopt being active rain, hail and shine, is a big job for an adult, let alone a child.

Supermarkets are full of packaged snacks which are high fat, high sugar, high salt and high in preservatives and our bodies are just not able to process it all. Especially if the child consuming it all is not very active.

My personal opinion and the way I operate at home with my 3 kids is to be very hard core about it. I don’t buy any prepackaged snacks, food is as close to its natural state as possible and hydration is milk or water. I am not saying it is easy, because it is always easier to give in.

Here is a little story to illustrate the what goes in, comes out theory.  A year ago we inherited some chickens who had not been eating proper chicken food, the egg shells were so soft they broke as you picked them up or you ended up with an omlette full of egg shell! Having bought them proper food, after a few months the egg became bigger and the shells became hard. You really are what you eat!

I want to get a group together, of parents and children who are wanting to make a big change to their current way of eating and not exercising. If you and your child would like to join – either call or email or leave a comment on the post.

Here’s to making the change …
